Rava Masala Appam Recipe | How to make Rava Masala Appam

Rava Masala Appam is instant Appam recipe. Appam is made using Idly Dosa batter. Appam is soft dumpling.

Appam can be prepared as a spicy / salty and sweet dish as well. Appam is cooked in a special pan which is called Appam Chatti. The pan has small round slots to pour batter to fry.

Rava Masala Appam is a simple and easy dish. I have already posted recipe for instant rava idli. Rava Masala Appam is prepared using the same batter recipe. We can add veggies to make Appam. It is a good snack and good food for kids. Adjust the level of spices when preparing rava masala Appam for kids.

In this recipe, I have added dry curry leaves. When rava is roasted, dry curry leaves are added. If you are not having dry curry leaves, you can use fresh curry leaves. Add fresh curry leaves along with asafetida.

Here is the complete recipe for Rava Masala Appam.

Heat oil in a pan. Leave mustard seeds in it and allow to splutter. Also add asafetida (heeing) now.

Now add chopped onion in it and fry till onion becomes translucent.

When onion is translucent, add chopped green chili in it. You can add red chili also instead of green chili. If you are willing to add red chili powder, then add red chili powder in oil after asafetida (heeing) is added.

Fry for 15 seconds when green chili becomes soft. Now add rava / sooji / semolina in it.

Roast it for 1 minute on medium flames. Roast rava only until its color does not change. Turn the flames off and let the rava cool completely.

Now add dried curry leaves. I have used dried curry leaves. You can also use fresh curry leaves as well. In case you are using fresh curry leaves, then add them in oil in first step. Adding fresh curry leaves in oil adds flavors in the oil.

Now add beaten yogurt in it. Mix well. If required, add some water. Mix well.

Make a batter of thick consistency just like done for rava idli. The batter should not be thin at all. If it becomes thin, roast some more rava and add it in the batter to get thick consistency.

Now add baking soda now and mix well. Add salt to taste.  Now heat Appam pan. Drop some oil in each of the slot.

Now pour one tbsp of batter in each slot. Let it cook on low / medium flames.

Turn the side and cook until Appam is cooked evenly from both sides. Cook till both the sides are slight golden brown in color.

Rava Masala Appam is ready. Serve it hot with Chutney.
