Vermicelli Upma Recipe | How to make Vermicelli Upma/ Semiya Upma

Vermicelli or Semiya upma is a very quick breakfast or snack. It is best when served with ginger tea. Vermicelli is the thing which can be used to make sweets like kheer, paysam, halwa and can be consumed as a salty snack like upma also.

What is Vermicelli :

Vermicelli means little worms, but this vermicelli has nothing to do with worms. Vermicelli means thin strands , long or little in size. Indian subcontinent and Asian countries have variety of vermicelli included in their regular food. This is also known as noodles. Mostly we see noodles made of rice flour. Wheat flour noodles are called spaghetti or pasta.

In Indian subcontinent, vermicelli is thin , infect very thin and small in size pasta which is used for various sweet and salty recipes. Earlier, almost 2 decades ago vermicelli was made at home. It was a summer afternoon activity for the women at home. They used to make vermicelli noodles at home and dry it in the shade. Once dry, they would roast it slightly and after cooling down, they would store it in air tight container and would use it for whole year. Now we can find vermicelli at any grocery store. Vermicelli is made from refined flour (maida). Wheat flour vermicelli is also available in the stores which is more healthy as compared to the former one.

Ingredients for Vermicelli / Semiya Upma

  • Vermicelli : 1 cup
  • Onion : 1/2 (finely chopped)
  • Carrot : 1/2 (finely chopped or grated)
  • Capsicum : 1/2 cup (chopped)
  • Green Peas: 1/4 cup
  • Curry Leaf : 5 - 6
  • Salt to taste
  • Green Chilli : 1 (finely chopped)
  • Turmeric Powder : 1/4 tsp
  • Mustard Seeds : 1/2 tsp
  • Lemon Juice : 1 tsp
  • Ghee / Oil : 2 tsp 
  • Water : 1 + 1/2 cup
  • How to make Vermicelli / Semiya Upma

    To make Vermicelli / Semiya upma, first give vermicelli a roast. In a pan, add vermicelli, roast it till it is golden in color. Roasted vermicelli is also available in the stores. Just check if the vermicelli you have is not already roasted. If roasted, you should skip roasting it.

    When vermicelli is roasted, keep it aside. Now we can start preparing the tempering (tadka) for it. In a pan, heat ghee. Throw mustard seeds in it. When mustard seeds splutter, add curry leaves in it. Curry leaves give a nice aroma to the upma.

    Add thin chopped onion in it. Fry the onion till it is translucent. Few people like to brown onion just like biryani. Its a personal choice. Once onion is cooked as per your preference, add thin chopped vegetables carrot, capsicum in it. Cook for few minute on low / medium flames. 

    Its preferred to keep the vegetables crunchy in upma. We should avoid overcooking vegetables . 2 - 3 minutes of low flame cooking is enough to keep it crunchy yet cooked.

    Add chopped green chilli and green peas now. Also add salt as per taste and turmeric powder. Mix well.

    Now add water in it. Bring the water to boil. Once the water comes to boil, add roasted vermicelli in it. Mix it lightly else vermicelli may break. We should cover the pan and keep the flames low. We have to cook till the water is completely absorbed. It takes around 4  - 5 minutes on low flames.

    Now Vermicelli / semiya upma is ready. Adding some lemon juice enhances the flavor of upma. Garnishing with chopped coriander leaves also makes it look and smell good. Serve it hot.

    Adding some roasted peanut or any sev mix gives an extra crunch to upma. Now as vermicelli upma is ready .consume it hot. My personal favorite is  vermicelli upma with ginger tea. This combination goes very well.
