Sattu Sharbat is summer drink. Sattu means any dal or grain roasted and than powdered. Most common Sattu is black roasted Chana powder. Sometimes Sattu can be a mix of cereal and pulses. Sattu Sharbat is a summer cooler for human body.

Outdoor temperature reaches around 40 C in North India and the demand for cooling drinks arise. Afternoon around 5 p.m. sharbat or other cooling drinks replace the tea time. Sattu Sharbat is one such drink. Easy to make and tastes heavenly. It immediately refreshes and also fulfills the need of having evening snack. 

Sattu is a fiber rich food which is also good for them who keep watch on their weight and for the people dealing with diabetes. Sattu is a good source of iron and protein as well. It is good for digestion. 

Black Chana used to make Sattu /  Powder

To make Sattu, I get roasted Black Chana from grocery store and powder it at home. I make a batch of bit coarse powder and a batch of thin fine powder. Coarse Sattu powder is used as stuffing in litti and parathas whereas the fine powdered Sattu is used to make Sattu Sharbat or Sattu Lemonade drink. 

Sattu is a very healthy and protein rich food. In Punjab, sattu is made of barley. Roasted chana sattu is popular in Bihar, U.P. , M.P. and Bengal. 

If you have never tried Sattu earlier, Sattu Sharbat is the best way to start with. Its a quick, no cooking and easy drink to make and fills with energy. 

Recipe Details : Sattu ka Sharbat

Ingredients for Sattu Sharbat

  • Chana ka Sattu : 3 tsp
  • Powdered Jaggery : 2 tsp (adjust to taste)
  • Chilled Water : 1 glass
  • Lemon Juice : 1 tsp
  • Black Salt : 1/4 tsp
  • How to make Sattu Sharbat

    To make Sattu Sharbat, in a bowl mix jaggery in chilled water. Let it dissolve completely. 

    Add Sattu Powder in it and mix well to dissolve it. Sattu is a thick powder so we have to stir as it will take some time to dissolve itself completely. Use a fork to stir well.

    When Jaggery and Sattu powder is dissolved completely in chilled water, add lemon juice and black salt now. Mix well.

    Add the ice cubes if you are willing. Sattu Sharbat is ready. This is the one simplest Sattu Sharbat recipe and there can be other versions to make Sattu Sharbat. Adding flavoring like cardamom powder or cinnamon powder will enhance the taste. 

    Once Sattu Sahrbat is ready, Serve it chilled. Now you should keep a stir in the glass. If you keep aside it for a minute, Sattu flour will sit in the bottom and it will need a stir.

    This is one recipe of Sattu as main ingredient. There are various recipes / preparations with sattu. Bihar's famous Litti chokha is made using Sattu stuffing in Litti. Sattu can be used to make Laddoo. Sattu Lemondae can be an alternate to Sattu Sharbat in case someone off sugar. Sattu can be used to make cutlets and it can be added in any stuffing for Sattu parathas

    Sattu sharbat is very quick drink which can be prepared in no time. It is good to use powdered jaggery for sattu sharbat. If jaggery is not availbale, we can use sugar or brown sugar.
